TPLO Recovery Stages
December 2024
First, we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. No matter how you celebrate this season may it be the best ever,
Today we will talk about the 4 stages of TPLO recovery and things to watch for at every stage.
Stage 1
Post surgical stage, it starts on day one and goes until Incision is healed approximately 14 days. Things to watch for:
1. Daily Incision checks for signs of Infection. Take daily photos with your cell phone.
2. Promote Rest, The Healing Pen works perfect for this! Setup your recovery room in a quiet area of your home. Always follow the confinement plan for recovery.
3. Monitor your dog's pain levels. Because our furry friends can't talk, watch for Increased restlessness, decreased appetite, & whining. Follow your veterinarian's direction on giving medications. If your dog is doing really well it means the medication is adjusted correctly.
4. Watch your dog's weight. Speak to your veterinarian on feedings and amount. Frozen bone broth works well after surgery to help stimulate your dog's appetite. Use an Ice cube tray to make frozen bone broth treats
Stage 2
Early Recovery lasting 2 weeks to 6 weeks
1. Continue with shorts walks, 2 to 3 times a day 5 to 10 minutes each.
2. Continue ROM exercises, Ice leg before and after for the dog's comfort.
3. Remember The plate is still fusing to the bone. No jumping, horse play or running is allowed, no matter how good your pup is feeling.
Stage 3
Intermediate Recovery 6 weeks to 10 weeks
1. Increase walk time 15 to 30 minutes as tolerated by your dog. 2 to 3 times a day.
2. Start strengthening exercises, walking on inclines, sit to stand, at this time you are helping to build strength and endurance for your dog
Stage 4
Advanced recovery 10 weeks to 16 weeks
1. Continue to build muscle, increase exercise, off leash play time, physical therapy if needed.
This is guide so you understand what's Involved with your furry friend's recovery journey. Always ask your veterinarian before proceeding to the next stage. Every dog is different and heals differently. Sometimes we need to take a step back to move forward.
We wish you and your furry friend a speedy recovery. With some careful planning you can get through this with minimal stress. We are always here for you.
