TPLO Tips for a Successful Recovery
Follow all Instructions provided by your pets' surgeon. If you have questions, please ask for clarification.
Provide a quiet comfortable environment for your pet to rest and relax through recovery. Pens work better then crates for TPLO surgery.
Work on maintaining a healthy weight. It's easy for your pet to gain weight through recovery. (Speak to your vet on diet through recovery)
Keep your pet socially engaged with puzzle toys and lick mats.
Monitor your pet for Infections, pain and swelling. Take photos of Incision daily. This will help your veterinarian should you need to reach out by phone
Signs of Infection are Increased redness hot to touch area and or drainage from Incision.
Signs of Pain are Increased restlessness, guarding, decreased appetite & whining.
Use supportive devices like slings, harness, & lick sleeves with approval of your vet.
Get your dog used to these items prior to surgery.
Lastly pick up all supplies two weeks prior to surgery. Ice packs, Heat packs, Cones or Lick sleeve, an Orthopedic bed for your pup to recover on. Notebook to track daily care. Puzzle toys & Lick Mats.
We wish you and your pet a stress-free recovery. TPLO recovery is a Marathon not a Sprint. Slow and steady one day at a time is always best for this 2-to-6-month recovery.
